Euglena is a one-celled protist that has traits of both plant and animal cells. It contains chlorophyll and has an eye spot to detect light. Yet, it has a flagella for movement through its aquatic environment and can ingest food through its gullet. A colony of euglena are exposed to sunlight. Based on the traits of this organisms, what would you expect to happen?

  • jamuuj: I believe the answer for the above question is that Euglena have chlorophyll which means the can do photosynthesis (process by which green plants make their own food using the energy from the sunlight). Therefore Euglena can create glucose and oxygen using energy from sunlight, carbon (iv) oxide and water. Euglena have characteristics of both plant and animal cells, like plants some species are photoautotrophs and have the ability to use light to produce nutrient through photosynthesis, while other like animal cells are heterotrophs.
